Cole Pettem takes in Villa's latest loss, their ninth in a row.

That's it. Relegation is here, and it's all because of a tepid loss to Manchester United that pitted a bad team against a boring one. Cole Pettem of TalkAstonVilla has got the post-match recap for us.

Oh hey, it's Joleon Lescott talking again after another devastating defeat. This should be fun.

Let's take a trip back in time. To when Joleon Lescott, mere minutes after a crushing home defeat to Liverpool, tweeted a picture of a car. He then followed it up with an apology that said "we didn't try" and also claimed that his butt sent the tweet. It became really obvious that we shouldn't let Lescott do anything that might get to the eyes and ears of fans after matches. Or maybe ever.

But after Aston Villa sleepwalked to a 1-0 loss to Manchester United in a match that ensured relegation, some enterprising journalist decided to ask him questions. And now we've got more examples of "stuff that comes straight from Lescott's a**" after a big loss. Let's take these one at a time. All of the quotes can be found here.

"As an individual I can only take my part in the blame but I don't think it's ever as bad as what people portray in the press."

You've been pretty good at deflecting your part of the blame all season. Like when you decided to threaten fans and challenge them to a fight at Bodymoor Heath. Or when you claimed that your rear end unlocked your phone, opened twitter, chose a picture, and tweeted the picture.

And you play for a Premier League team who have mustered three wins in thirty-four matches. That is exactly as bad as it is being portrayed.

"But we're not going to dwell on that and use it as an excuse."

Oh thank heavens. You're about to own up to how bad you've been.

"We've not been good enough this season and that's why we are where we are."

You did it! This is where you should stop. You've been rubbish this season. Your teammates have been rubbish this season. You tweeted in February that "Liverpool are and were better than us for 90 minutes but that doesn't excuse mine and the teams [sic] lack of commitment for the 90 minutes."

So yeah, we know you've not been good enough. Good interview. Perhaps the first time you've acted like a captain since you've taken that armband.

"The criticism has been a bit of both; warranted and, at times, unfair. Throughout the season we have given reasons for people to jump on us, but there hasn't been so many reasons at times."

Aw crap, you're still talking. What has been unfair about the criticism this year, Joleon? Was it the part where we yelled at you and Micah and Brad and Ciaran and... and... for letting up countless stupid goals? Or was it the part where (and I'm sorry to keep harping on this, but you make thousands of pounds each week so it's pretty damn inexcusable) you openly admitted to not actually working all that hard while playing in front of the fans in a big match against a very beatable (at the time) Liverpool team?

What part of the criticism has been unfair? Was it the criticism of you for tweeting pictures of cars? Or was it the criticism of the fact that you are a wildly ineffective centre back who should have left for the MLS when he had a chance? Show me the unfair criticism, Joleon.

"When things are going well you love it but when things aren't going well it's horrible to be a part of."

How would you know what it's like when things are going well? Have you been sleeping through this season in addition to not actually trying all that hard?

And yes, we know it's horrible to be a part of this. Some of us have shown up for all of the matches.

"It's a tough time at the minute..."

"At the minute." LOL.

"...and we owe it to the club and the fans to keep striving forward."

I don't think "keep" means what you think it means. That would imply that you have been striving forward. Or perhaps it's "forward" that has you confused.

"Eric has come in and done a great job."

Ah, I get it now. You just don't understand what any word means. you see, Eric has done a terrible job. He's afraid that you're all about to mutiny on him. He chooses inexplicable lineups. HE KEEPS CHOOSING YOUR TERRIBLE SELF.

So see, "great" means "good." That means he would have made the right decisions. "Eric has come in and absolutely sh** the bed." There. I fixed it for you.

"It's disappointing but we showed a level of pride and desire today that probably hasn't been there enough throughout the season..."

What was that level? Because I saw zero pride. And almost no desire. Except maybe in the final minutes once Rudy Gestede came on. Which, admittedly, is more than I see in most matches. But that's not enough.

"Now it's been confirmed that we are going to go down, hopefully it's a weight off our shoulders and we can play with a level of freedom and give these fans what they deserve."

Wait. You are. Relieved. That Aston Villa are relegated. You are happy. You can start playing well now.

Why weren't you playing well before? Where was this "freedom" when Villa still had a chance at preventing relegation. You know what's an easy way to relieve stress? Not getting relegated. You want freedom? Play well enough to deserve it.

I've watched you lot this season. You play with plenty of freedom. No manager in the world is so dumb as to tell you to not mark strikers in the box. You made that choice. Over. And over. And over. That is what your freedom brought us. Your freedom, for which you are so excited, is exactly the reason that we're in this mess at all.

"We've got some home matches left and, as an individual and collectively, we're still determined to put performances in to honour the fans."

Again. "Still" implies that you've ever put in a performance to honour the fans.

If by "you" I mean "the team" you have not. If I mean "you, Joleon Lescott" you really have not.

"Of course I want to be part of the battle. I'm here for as long as Aston Villa want me."

Aston Villa don't want you any more. At least the fans don't. If you're around as long as you're wanted, it'll be a sweet relief to not see you play in any more matches this season.

F*** off, Joleon. You're an absolute blight on this club. If God appeared and told me that I could make one personnel change at Aston Villa, I would sack you. In a season where I've come to hate pretty much everything and everyone associated with Aston Villa, you are the thing I despise the most.

Aston Villa lost. Aston Villa are relegated.

Here's the briefest recap you've ever read, and it really hits all of the salient points of this match. The whistle blew. Tepid football ensued. Manchester United tried to be exciting. Marcus Rushford actually was exciting (and very good!) and scored. Then halftime. Then the second half. Lots of tepid football. Rudy Gestede came on. Missed an open goal, hit the post. Whistle blew. Aston Villa relegated.

That was it.

For the match. For the season. For the death watch we've all kept over this sickly club. It's all over now. Four matches remain and they mean absolutely nothing. If you're done following for the year, I get it.

And the worst part is how much this still hurts. We've known relegation was coming since November, really. It felt as if it happening would finally ease the worry. And it might. But for right now it's just miserable.

To everyone reading: thank you. Villa are down, but we're not out. The club isn't dead, and it will go on. And we'll all be there on the glorious day when we make it back to the Premier League.

We've got everything you need to follow along as Aston Villa travel to Old Trafford.

Well, this goes up before Norwich and Sunderland are done playing. So let's do two introductions:

Read this if Norwich lose:

We still have hope! If Aston Villa can beat Manchester United in a league match for only the fourth time since the beginning of the Premier League we'll keep having a chance. All it takes is a win today. And then four more wins. And four more Norwich losses. And some bad results for Sunderland. AND THEN VILLA WILL BE SAFE!

Or, Villa could lose. Or draw. And it could all be over. And it all starts now.

Below you'll find all of the information you need to see either the beginning of Aston Villa's epic comeback or to be present at the funeral for a friend.

<strike>Read this if Norwich draw or win:</strike>

<strike>Well then. It's over. Now we're just going through the motions and trying to stave off anarchy and apathy. This is where I'd normally say "it's been fun" but we all know that would be a lie. It has been anything but fun this season.</strike>

<strike>But we've got five matches left. And while the temptation is there to ignore this team, you should probably watch while you still can. Video coverage of the Championship is not great. So tune in. We've got everything you need to do so right below here.</strike>

Remember last time Villa played United, when a bad deflection was all that separated the two sides? Yeah, don’t expect that this time around.

You know, it would be a great troll job if Aston Villa went into Old Trafford tomorrow and beat Manchester United to prolong their Premier League status for another week — given Norwich City didn’t pick up a point against Sunderland in the early kickoff — wouldn’t it? I’d love that so much. Let’s do it.

What to know about Villa

Eric Black is a bad caretaker manager.

He’s been quoted saying his goal is to win a match for Villa or whatever, which makes sense except for the fact that winning games does nothing productive for the club now. We know what this group of (puts on Donald Trump hat) SAD! LOW-ENERGY LOSERS (takes off Donald Trump hat) is all about, and it’s a bunch of crap that’s getting this club relegated from the Premier League in the first place. It’s not productive for the club at all to keep playing the same crew that’s making sure it goes (puts on Taylor Swift costume) down in flames (leaves Taylor Swift costume on because she’s fantastic).

Like, what the hell does the club get out of playing the same general lineup every week? Scott Sinclair, Aly Cissokho, Leandro Bacuna and Joleon Lescott haven’t given you anything all year, so why the hell aren’t you trying something different if your goal is to "win a match," Eric?

I’d rather start the entire U-21 squad that beat West Ham on Monday than the senior squad we put out the week before. Jack Grealish is fit again, and not including him in this squad would be a disgrace after his performance Monday. Jordan Lyden was in the XI last week, so I’d love to see him again, but players like André Green should be joining them in the setup.

Look, give me a team worth caring about. That’s not Villa’s senior players right now.

What to know about United

LOL, Louis van Gaal.

At least the Red Devils are still in the FA Cup, and despite their best efforts, it’s still pretty plausible United qualify for the Champions League, which is hilarious.

It’s shocking how quickly United went from being the team at the top that nobody could beat to, well, a team that’s worse than Arsenal and Spurs.

Regardless, and I’ve said this every time this year about a top club, Villa’s going to have the inferior players at every spot on the pitch. It’s going to take a great, passionate performance to get something out of this and, quite frankly, who’d expect that out of those same, boring senior players?

United moved through to the FA Cup semi-final midweek with a win over West Ham United, but they weren’t particularly impressive in doing so — the Hammers should’ve done more in that match. It’d be winnable for even the Paul Lambert Villa sides, but unless Black surprises us, don’t expect Villa to finally pick up a shock result.

The odds

Just put the money on United at any price and watch the money flow in.

The prediction

Villa are great at making out-of-form sides look good. Give me United, and give them a few goals, too.

United 4, Villa 1

Jack and Robert return for episode 87 of the Holtecast.

Well, this might be it. This might actually be the last podcast we do in which Aston Villa have any hope of being a Premier League team next year. I mean, the hope isn't all that real to begin with, seeing as Aston Villa need to win out and Norwich City need to lose out and... and... yeah. Probably not happening.

So we tackle the impending certainty of the drop, mostly sealed in last weekend's woeful showing against Bournemouth. We also dig in to your twitter questions, Gabby Agbonlahor's impending fitness nightmare, this weekend's match at Manchester United, and the question of who will actually manage this team.

You'll notice that we don't have a YouTube video below, and that's because we're contemplating a switch back to audio-only for the sake of better audio quality. Let us know what you think! Should we go back to videos, or do you like it this way? And thanks, as always, for listening!

The season is lost. Let's try out some players that could be relevant to our future.

On Monday, Aston Villa's U21 team won a thrilling contest by the score of three goals to two against West Ham. A sopping wet Villa Park pitch that more closely resembled a swamp than a footballing surface certainly contributed to some of the thrills and spills, but the Young Lions put on an energetic display that should give Villa fans signs of hope going forward.

Captained by Jack Grealish, who was instrumental in creating the first two goals before being forced off with an injury, the young Villans displayed attacking quality that the senior side simply hasn't shown this term. Even though I tweeted that the entire youth side should be trotted out at the weekend against Manchester United in the upcoming Premier League fixture, that's not entirely what I believe should happen. However, some of these kids deserve the chance to show what they can do.

Even megamoney Manchester United have seen success come from playing the youngsters this season. Striker Marcus Rashford, just 18 years old, has scored five times across all competitions. Central defender Patrick McNair has played 400 minutes of first team football at the age of 20. Villa should take a page out of United's book and give it a shot.

Obviously Matija Šarkić is too young and inexperienced to displace either Brad Guzan or Mark Bunn, and as much as we'd like to see him play, it just isn't going to happen. The same goes for central defenders Kevin Toner (who may be suspended after incurring a red card at the end of the U21 match) and Niall Mason. Oscar Borg, newly signed from West Ham, is a left back. Why not try him in place of Aly Cissokho?

In midfield, we've already seen glimpses of Jordan Lyden and André Green in first team matches this season. Let's see more of them. Jack Grealish and Adama Traoré also played in the youth team match, but Grealish came off injured and it was Adama's first game back from injury, so even in my wildly speculative scenario, I'm ruling them out.

Some experience is probably needed, but that can come from the forwards. Jordan Ayew and one of either Rudy Gestede or Libor Kozák will lead the line against the Red Devils.

Possible Lineups:

Manchester United (4-2-3-1):

David de Gea; Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo; Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin; Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Memphis Depay; Anthony Martial.

Aston Villa (4-4-2):

Brad Guzan; Alan Hutton, Micah Richards, Ciaran Clark, Oscar Borg; André Green, Jordan Lyden, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Anyone But Kieran Richardson; Jordan Ayew, Libor Kozák.

Do you agree that Villa should throw caution to the wind in an already-lost season? Or should we keep playing Lescott? Let us know in the comments!
