Aston Villa’s latest signing in what is now becoming a hectic transfer deadline day for the club will be SC Caen’s Frederic Guilbert.
However, the 24 year-old right-back will not be joining the club right now.
Guilbert is a permanent transfer to the Villa, joining Lovre Kalinic as Villa’s second full transfer of the Winter window - but will be loaned back to Caen for the rest of the season as they battle against relegation from France’s Ligue 1.
This was sanctioned because Villa did not want to risk scouting the full-back only to lose him in the summer - the agreement with Caen to keep Guilbert until the end of the season is a specific clause that helped AVFC ease along negotiations. If you think about it, it’s not that strange.
The right-back will seemingly replace Alan Hutton who will likely leave Villa upon the expiry of his contract at the end of this season, and will battle James Bree and Ahmed Elmohamady for the starting role.
Welcome Frederic - but not just right now!
