Aston Villa have recalled Jed Steer to ensure that their goalkeeping ranks are strong and stable.

Aston Villa have announced on their official site that Jed Steer will be returning to the club early, cutting his loan spell with Charlton Athletic short.

As Aston Villa hit the walls with a injury crisis after Axel Tuanzebe and Jack Grealish collapsed to long term injuries - news broke of a further injury with Ørjan Nyland rupturing his achilles tendon in a break down that will likely cost him a large part of 2019 after Villa’s 1-1 draw with Preston North End that saw out 2018.

Naturally, Aston Villa have made moves to ensure that their goalkeeping department stays full to the brink (as it should be) despite Nyland’s injury. Goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic was signed, but will not be allowed to take to the field until the FA Cup tie with Swansea City due to transfer and registration rules. Steer has been recalled to see Villa through until that date - with on-loan goalkeeper Andre Moreira returning to Atletico Madrid after seemingly failing to impress the Villa coaching staff.

Steer isn’t Villa’s only recall - with both Easah Suliman and Tommy Elphick recalled to keep numbers up at centre-back for Villa.

It’s likely that Steer will be loaned out once Villa stabilise with Lovre Kalinic, but it’s equally as likely that he backs up Kalinic for the remainder of the season.
