You can't be blamed for forgetting that Phil Senderos was an Aston Villa player. After being injured for the majority of last season, Tim Sherwood made the decision to leave the Swiss centre-back out of his 25 man squad for the first half of the 15/16 Premier League season.
Which was probably unfair. During the brilliant start to the 14/15 campaign which saw Villa actually succeed, Senderos manufactured a good partnership with both Ron Vlaar & Nathan Baker. After his injury, Senderos was pushed out of the team by the form of both Ciaran Clark and Jores Okore. One would think that the departure of Ron Vlaar would open up a space for Senderos, but then again: Aston Villa have a large recent portfolio of going against the grain, so to speak.
It might come as a surprise that Aston Villa will actually receive some money for the forgotten Swiss who has been marked for a contract release in the summer. The Daily Express have reported that Lazio are set to take him for the sum of £1.5m to beef up their leaky defence. Yes, someone, somewhere wants an Aston Villa defender to shore up their backline.
To conclude, it would be unfair to judge Senderos based on his performances. He was, like so many other players who have come through this club, barely given a chance at all and shipped off to another team who will make use of him on a cut-price deal.
