Things have gotten awfully raucaus in the Aston Villa goalkeeping ranks. Two days ago we found out that Shay Given, who had taken over the number one spot from American Brad Guzan after the latter's gaffes against Manchester City, was headed to Middlesbrough on a free. Then yesterday, as the deal seemed all but done, Stoke City swooped in and seemed to take over the deal. While the Given matter is still unresolved, it's apparent that he's gone and a replacement will be needed. There was some thought (perhaps a bit too hopeful) that Given to Stoke would somehow be part of a move for Asmir Begovich.
But that wasn't to be, as Villa have today announced the signing of Mark Bunn to a two-year contract. Bunn comes to Villa after having his contract at Norwich City expire. He hasn't played much for the Canaries lately, but he was the club's primary starter under Chris Hughton in the 2012-13 season. He will likely come into Villa behind Brad Guzan but ahead of Jed Steer.
If the rumours that Guzan might be headed out are true, Bunn may be the first choice or he may still be considered a backup and Tim Sherwood could still be looking for a starting keeper elsewhere. We've gone from being pretty settled between the sticks a year ago to running around with our pants on our heads now. Get this settled quickly, Villa. It's not a position where you want a lot of question marks.
