2019-2020 Player Preview: Birkir Bjarnason

Thor is looking to find his role in this new and improved squad

Birkir Bjarnason - Thor - the Icelandic midfielder that had a solid role to play for Villa in previous seasons. He filled in nicely when he was needed, all around the center of the park as a holding midfielder, box to box, and even attacking on the wing when necessary.

Unfortunately, he never really solidified himself in any of those roles specifically due to injuries and performances, and was never really a constant starter for Villa in the Championship.

Now that we’re back in the big time, we’ve made some signings, and really improved that middle of the pitch and it’s hard to tell just how big of a part B.B. will play at Villa Park this season.

It’s a rough thing to think about and put into words, but it seems like Birkir’s time in claret and blue at Villa Park may be done and dusted. Whether a move is found for him before Thursday’s deadline or not, it’s no guarantee at all for him to be in the match-day roster of 18.

If this is the end, thank you B.B. Never put a foot wrong in my opinion. May not be the most technical, but definitely the most professional, always putting in a shift and effort when he was given the chance. If it’s not the end, I hope he can continue to grow as a player, and adapt his game, despite being 31 already.

Maybe this is all entirely wrong and I’m an idiot and we will actually see Thor on the pitch throughout the season in that utility role still. Who knows. It’s a preview.
