The signing of Wesley Moraes saw the spades thrust deeply into the history of Aston Villa, to dig deeper into new territory. Wesley is the first Brazilian player to join Aston Villa.
Ever.
And now he won't be alone. According to breaking reports from The Telegraph (and of course John Percy), Aston Villa are on the verge of sealing a £15 million pound deal for Douglas Luiz of Manchester City.
Luiz, a defensive midfielder, has spent the past few seasons impressing in Spain at Girona - a club with close links to Manchester City. However, as highly as he is rated, City's side, under Pep Guardiola is amongst the toughest first-XI's to break into. And for good reason.
Douglas was loaned twice to Girona, with the second occasion coming after he failed to secure a UK work permit in 2018. Let's hope that changes due to his international calibre, the price tag and the fact that he'll be the first choice in his position right now. The work permit situation last season annoyed Guardiola - who wanted Luiz to work with his first team.
At £15 million, Luiz comes cheaper than Kalvin Phillips. He's also a Brazilian youth international and a clear indication of Villa's transfer direction. Line up multiple targets in the same position and action option B if option A stalls. Villa may still move for Kalvin Phillips, though - as they do require another defensive midfielder.
Luiz is pending official announcement, and will fly out to the USA when the deal is done.
