The cash was always going to be spent - and now Aston Villa have announced their third summer signing in the surprise transfer of striker Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge.
In a deal that surprised almost everyone, Wesley will become Villa’s record signing - and the club are currently waiting on international clearance and a work permit to be awarded; but the fee and contract has been agreed.
7 years ago Aston Villa signed a strong, tall, promising 21-year old striker from the Jupiler Pro League.

Now they have signed a strong, tall, promising 22-year old striker from the same league: Brazilian Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge for £22m.@hlnsport @niels_27 #avfc pic.twitter.com/Np31ezkEUJ
The tall Brazilian forward instantly boosts Villa at a weak position - striker - and will likely have large resale value and a high talent ceiling. He fits the bill in all ways and most know it - he was previously awarded the Belgian ‘Golden Shoe’ for the best young player in the Pro League.
The easy comparison here is to compare Wesley to Christian Benteke - and you’d not be too wrong to do so, but the pressure will be on our new man to perform from the get go and he probably won’t be afforded anytime at all to adapt. Villa need him.
And they also need that work permit sorted.
