It’s on again.
The Birmingham Mail are reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a quick-fire bid to bring Jack Grealish over from Aston Villa. Villa’s star-man is currently preparing for Villa’s preseason in Portugal, but the Mail expect the deal to be completed the very second that a transfer fee is agreed.
The fledging Grealish transfer saga hasn’t had that many turns. Leicester wanted him, but decided to move for Norwich’s James Maddison for just over £20 million. Liverpool were rumoured to be interested, but there’s been no serious move from Anfield for Grealish. Tottenham’s desire for the player has been clear, and even before Villa’s financial woes broke into the mainstream, they were haggling the Villans down for a cut-price deal.
Villa are in a terrible negotiating position, especially when up against Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy - who has a enviable track record of making some incredible deals to strengthen his side. There’s almost no way that Villa get the £30 million that they would want for Grealish. A fair valuation for the club’s prize asset, but still, not a price they can push the bargain for.
One wonders that if Villa were to seal an early sale of Grealish, that they’d have possibly pushed the fee clear of their valuation - but with Villa’s need for cash very much in the open, it may be a case of taking the offer on the table.
It must be clear - NO deal has been put on the table yet. However, it’s looking likely that Grealish will leave Villa before the transfer window closes on the 9th of August. While Tottenham want the deal done now, I expect Villa will do all they can to hang on until the transfer deadline. Equally, I suspect that the Play-Off Final was Grealish’s last game in Aston Villa colours.
