Aston Villa 2017-18 player preview: Micah Richards

Once-promising defender, only a Villan because no one else wants him.

The ballad of Micah Richards is not a pleasant one. Early heights and a massive fall. Now a man without a role or a position. Or is he? Richards has been selected in preseason matches and has .... certainly appeared on the pitch for most of that time. That is not to say he was impressive. He might see some playing time at center back — behind Chester, Terry, Samba, & Elphick.

The problem with that is simple — he also is not a center back. Too many runs forward, no sense of positioning, and gets beat. There is no real way forward at RB behind Alan Hutton, Ritchie De Laet, Elmo, & James Bree.

He is a Villa player under contract until 2019. He was once a rising start in English football — can he find some positive form? Sure. And Villa fans should be rooting for him to do.
