Tonight’s Carabao Cup 2nd round draw has revealed that Aston Villa will play Wigan Athletic on the week commencing August 21st.
The game will be played at Villa Park and the tie was picked out of the hat by no less than Alex McLeish. Villa were seeded, so avoided a Premier League team in this round. Birmingham were drawn at home to Bournemouth, so the Second City Derby won’t be taking place in the cup unless both teams get through - and even then, it might not be guaranteed if Villa are unseeded in the next round, when the top 7 PL clubs enter. As an aside, Birmingham were drawn in the southern section of the cup, while Villa were drew in the northern section, for some reason. West Brom, in the northern section drew Accrington.
There’s no rematch if it goes to a draw, with this being the League Cup, so Villa will have to deal with extra time if they cannot best Wigan.
Last time out, It was sloppy, messy and wet - but Villa managed to get the job done, even if it was tight squeeze. 2-1 and they walked out as winners, with Jed Steer being the hero and Callum O’Hare making a name for himself.
What can we expect from the Carabao Cup? A lot of fun - and that’s what Villa were for most parts against Colchester. If Steer, O’Hare, Davis and Green feature frequently in this cup, we’ve got a lot to look forward to. Long may it continue, but we’ll have to get past The Latics for that to come true.
