Aston Villa 2016-17 player preview: Jed Steer

He made 38 Championship appearances last year, but Jed Steer doesn’t look to be in the plans for Villa this term.

Heading into this Championship campaign, Aston Villa have one goalkeeper who was a starter in the division last year: Jed Steer.

Who?

Yeah, Jed. You know, the guy who Villa signed away from Norwich three years ago and who started the season finale in 2014-15?

He’s still here, I guess. After sitting on Villa’s bench a couple seasons ago, Steer spent the 2015-16 campaign out on loan as Huddersfield’s first-choice ’keeper, making 38 appearances as the Terriers finished 19th in the Championship. But despite his experience as a starter in the division a season ago, Steer hasn’t been mentioned as a first-team option this term — hell, he appeared for the U-23 side midweek.

To be honest, it wouldn’t be too surprising if Steer got a move away from the club this window, be it permanently or on another loan deal. With Pierluigi Gollini and Mark Bunn ahead of him in the pecking order, Steer really doesn’t get anything out of being at Villa.
