On the eve of Villa's Championship campaign opener against Sheffield Wednesday, the club has announced another bit of promising news - youngster Andre Green has committed his foreseeable future to Villa in the form of a new three year contract.
It remains to be seen exactly what role Roberto di Matteo sees Green performing this season. He did praise Green, however, by saying that "Andre has been excellent and fully deserves a new contract. He has an exciting future ahead of him." Even if Green isn't fully ready to consistently feature in Villa's first team yet, the depth and optionality he provides the club with ahead of a grueling Championship campaign is invaluable. This season, even more than last, relying on a broader corps of players will be vital. Green and fellow youngsters Jack Grealish and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy will all provide good forward depth this season and going forward. Green will undoubtably continue to grow and improve as a player - regardless of how immediate his impart is, a new deal can be assessed as nothing but a step in the right direction.
