Aston Villa have lost their battle to hold onto Idrissa Gana Gueye as Everton have finally completed the signing of the Senegalese midfield star for a reported £7.1 million.
Gana goes to Goodison Park off the back of a pretty impressive campaign with Aston Villa where he rivalled N’Golo Kante as one of the surprise performers in midfield during the 2016/2017 Premier League campaign.
It’s not much of a surprise that Gana has moved, after a breakout year with Aston Villa, the club were still relegated and Gana had a relegation release clause that left the Villans at the mercy of anyone who would be willing to meet it.
Villa’s CEO Keith Wyness offered a ‘hands off’ message to any potential suitors, in the hope that Gana would stay. However, that won’t be the case and Villa will lose £2 million on an emerging star. That’s the bad news. The good news? Villa have options in midfield and might not struggle to replace Gana.
