Defensive backup option Jose Angel Crespo is the latest to depart B6.

Roberto Di Matteo's Aston Villa summer clear out continues as Spanish utility defender Jose Angel Crespo has today joined Greek side PAOK.

Crespo, 29, joined Villa last summer, in what was probably the strangest signing of the summer, but never really made an impact at Villa Park. He featured just once under Tim Sherwood, in a 1-0 defeat against Stoke City, before joining Rayo Vallecano on loan for the remainder of the season, as they got relegated from Spain's La Liga. Including Villa's relegation last season, this was Crespo's third relegation in just two seasons.

In all likelihood, Crespo's arrival at Villa didn't cost the club too much money, and his move to PAOK was probably an inexpensive one too. He joins the Greek side based out of Thessaloniki on a three year deal, and playing for the two time Greek Superleague champions, Crespo's run of successive relegations is almost certainly over.

Jose Crespo isn't the first Aston Villa player to depart the club this summer. Today marks the first day that the transfer window is open, and both Kieran Richardson and Charles N'Zogbia have left the club upon the expiry of their contracts. To be both honest and blunt, none of the trio will be missed.
