As a Championship side, Aston Villa this season entered the formerly titled Capital One Cup in the first round, having previously entered along with other Premier League sides in the second round.
The game will take place the week commencing August 8, thus taking place a few days after Villa’s first fixture in the Championship, an away trip to Sheffield Wednesday.
Villa should be able to beat League Two side Luton, but it will be interesting to see how strong a starting XI that new manager Roberto Di Matteo will go with. The game is sandwiched between a tough trip to Sheffield Wednesday and a winnable clash against Rotherham, so the cup tie at Luton could be the perfect opportunity for Villa’s youth players to stake a claim for first team contention in the upcoming season.
