While the FA Cup been underway since August, only the real minnows of English Football have been involved so far. That’s because the big teams don’t join until later, in the Third Round Proper. The 44 teams from the Premier League and Championship are added to 20 teams from the divisions below, and matches are played across the weekend of 6-9 January 2017.
Last year, Villa lost to Manchester City 4-0 in the Fourth Round after getting by Wycombe on a replay in the Third Round Proper.
This season, the opponent will be Tottenham Hotspur and Villa will travel to London. Spurs are fifth in the Premier League currently.
Villa were already knocked out of the League Cup this year by Luton Town of League Two in August by a score of 3-1. At the time of writing, Luton are sitting in fifth place in the fourth tier.
Meanwhile, city rivals Birmingham will be taking on current Championship leaders Newcastle United at St. Andrews. West Bromwich Albion will be hosting Derby County.
