Forget, for a moment, the setting. This isn’t the Championship. This is two of England’s biggest and most-important clubs facing off at the top half of the table. The 1975 European runners-up against the 1982 champions. These clubs have played 94 times since 1924, and Aston Villa has won 38 of them.
But for all of that history, it’s also the first time that this matchup has been contested since 2004. There, in the 2003-04 Premier League season, Aston Villa got a draw and Elland and a win at Villa Park. That split would be absolutely perfect this year, as it would mean four more points to Steve Bruce’s side in December.
Yes, this is the first time in more than a decade that these clubs have met, but it’s just the first of two such meetings this month. So get used to Leeds. And hopefully get used to them being sad.
See, because that would mean Villa had won.
