With a 1-0 win in the Second City Derby over Birmingham City yesterday, Aston Villa clinched their spot in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup. It was perhaps not the most convincing win in the long history of the rivalry, but it gives Villa bragging rights for a while and a chance to be among the final sixteen teams in a cup competition.
And with tonight's draw we now know that it will be an away trip to St. Marys to face Southampton in the fourth round. Southampton advanced on the strength of an 0-6 stomping of MK Dons today. After a stellar season last year, Southampton have returned to earth a bit in the Premier League and currently only sit one spot above Aston Villa in 16th.
The match will be played in the week of October 26th, which likely means on either Tuesday the 27th or Wednesday the 28th. Should Villa manage a win, they'll be just one round away from the two-legged semi-finals. It seems like a long shot, and plenty of people deride this competition, but booking a trip to Wembley sure would be a nice treat in February.
