It's been four years, eight months and six days since we last saw the Second City Derby contested. It is one of the fiercest and most bitter rivalries in all of English football, and we finally get to see it again today in the third round of the Capital One Cup. If you're just coming to this match without any knowledge of the season thus far, you might think it should be an easy win for Aston Villa. They are, after all, the Premier League team, and they're playing at home to a lowly Championship side.
But that ignores a few things. Things like the fact that Villa only have two wins this year and needed extra time to earn one of those against League Two opponents in the last round of this competition. It ignores the fact that Birmingham City are off to a very solid start with 12 points and 12 goals in seven matches, good enough for them to be sitting in seventh right now.
And it ignores the fact that in a derby this hotly contested logic can go right out the window. This should be an absolute thriller and we've got everything you need to follow along right here. We'll be along with lineups and an open thread as we get closer to the match, and you can read all of our coverage right here.
