Second City derby renewed as Villa draw Birmingham in Capital One Cup

After a wild evening at Villa Park, Tim Sherwood and company know who they'll be facing in the third round of the Capital One Cup. It's good news for fans of derbies.

It took a massive extra-time effort to do so, but Aston Villa advanced to the third round of the Capital One Cup today with their win over Notts County. With that behind them, all that was left was to wait for the draw to be conducted. Unfortunately, we had to wait on West Bromwich Albion and Port Vale to decide their extra-time match, too, so it took a while.

But now we know that Villa will be playing, and IT'S THE SECOND CITY DERBY!

Villa got drawn against Birmingham City at Villa Park and our club's actual real rivalry (suck it West Brom and Leicester) will be renewed for the first time since 2011. That year saw Villa draw the Blues twice in the Premier League and a heartbreaking loss at Saint Andrews in the League Cup. Now it's time for revenge.

The match will be played in the week of September 21. So probably September 22 or 23.

Elsewhere in the midlands, Wolves will travel to Middlesbrough, Leicester will host West Ham United, and West Brom will travel to Norwich.
