Ah the League Cup. Competition that has given us such results as an 0-1 loss to Leyton Orient (League One) in the second round last year, an 0-4 loss to Spurs (Premier League) in the third round in 2013, and a 3-4 aggregate loss to Bradford City (League Two) in the semifinals the season before that.
So it's not a competition where Villa have covered themselves in glory, recently. In the past three editions of the competition, Villa have only failed to lose against a side from the Championship. If they'd like to complete the collection this year they're going to have to win today in order to have a shot at a second-tier side.
And winning today is something that they should be able to do. Despite their recent dubious history in the cup, we have to remember that Notts County are a League Two side and Aston Villa are a Premier League squad. This should be the type of match that Villa can win easily. It should also be a match that lets Tim Sherwood get some more players match experience this year, and maybe finally convinces him to never use Gabby Agbonlahor again.
With all of that said, expect Gabby to score a hat-trick that cements his place in the side until the end of the universe in a 3-4 loss. The match isn't on really anywhere, so you'll have to rely on Jack Woodward at AVTV to take you through it. Here's to hoping we get to write a happy recap. Join us in the comments below!
