Despite rumours of his impending departure, Nathan Baker has today signed a new contract with Aston Villa, contracting him with the club for another four seasons.
Earlier this week, Nathan Baker was linked with a £2 million move to Championship side Burnley, so it is a bit of a surprise to see the 24 year old staying at Villa, especially when you consider that he isn't a first choice option.
Aston Villa are no strangers to defensive fragility, Baker has featured in a Villa defence that has struggled in recent seasons. Regardless, Baker is a useful squad player to keep around, especially if he stays fit. Heading into this season, Baker will likely have a few games to impress Tim Sherwood, until Jores Okore regains his fitness. In the longer term, if Aston Villa are able to secure European football, Baker would count as a homegrown player, and, in a Villa side that is increasingly recruiting players from the continent, homegrown players could become invaluable.
Today has been a big day for the Villa, lets just hope the club can tie down Ciaran Clark to a new deal before the summer ends too!
