It looks as though Aston Villa's press office and medical department are set to have a busy day today. Not only is Lorient striker Jordan Ayew set to sign for Villa today, but Spanish side Cordoba CF have revealed on Twitter that their defender Jose Angel Crespo is flying to Birmingham today to have a medical.
In a statement, the Spanish club said:
"Cordoba and Aston Villa have reached an agreement for the transfer of Jose Angel Crespo to the English team.
"The defender, after an agreement in principle between the clubs, travels to England today to undergo a medical before signing."
The 28 year old Crespo is something of a journeyman, having played for seven sides in ten years. This does however mean that he brings experience to a Villa backline that looked extremely fragile at times last season. In addition to experience, Crespo is versatile, as he can play all across the backline, in both fullback positions and as centre back. This makes Crespo a useful player to have around, as although it is unlikely that he will be a starter, he acts as a really useful player to have on the bench, as he can cover a number of positions.
Tim Sherwood said that he wanted to rid Aston Villa of it's losing mentality, so it's worth noting that Crespo is joining from recently relegated Cordoba. But regardless of this, the reported fee is around €1M, so for that price, it's not too much of a risk.
On a final note, Crespo signing could well lead to the departure of at least one of Villa's other defenders, with Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos and Chris Herd all names that have been thrown around as possible departures this summer.
