"No other business expected" for Aston Villa on transfer deadline day

Despite several intriguing links, it's now being reported that Aston Villa will not be making any additional signings before the close of the transfer window.

Aston Villa have been linked with Tom Cleverley, Sergio Canales, Jermain Defoe, and Andre Ayew today, but according to John Percy of the Telegraph they will not be making any moves before the close of the window:

If true, that's more than a little disappointing; the money to bring in another player or two is clearly there, and though Villa have looked quite good through their first three league games there are definitely still areas of need. It certainly appears as though Paul Lambert tried to address those needs, but in the end Cleverley wanted to play for Everton and Canales chose to stay put. But trying isn't doing, and if the window closes without any additions it will be a failing on some level.

Still, there's always the January window and it seems clear that Randy Lerner is willing to spend more than it seemed a few months ago. And with available funds going unspent, perhaps now Villa can finally get to putting new contracts in front of Ron Vlaar and Fabian Delph.
