Aston Villa have repeatedly stressed that Ron Vlaar is going nowhere. Paul Lambert said he wasn't about to sell. And after Manchester United bought Daley Blind and thus upped their quota of Netherlands internationals, Villa fans finally started to breathe a little easier.
But it's Transfer Deadline Day, so of course, it's required to have rumors about every single talented (and many not-so-talented) player in the world. With Christian Benteke now off the table, the gossip hounds have turned to another one of Villa's top talents: Vlaar.
Now it's Arsenal, apparently, that want him. After the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona -- or possibly after the defensive shambles that lead to Leicester City's equalizer on Sunday -- the Gunners are in the market for a quality center back to reinforce their back line.
There's no need to worry, though, Villa fans. Everyone knows that Arsène Wenger doesn't do deadline day, darlings. He's much too smooth for that.
Seriously, though, this is likely not a rumor that that needs much attention. Arsenal are also rumored to be after Matija Nastastic, but even if they don't land him, it's very unlikely that Villa would be foolish enough to let Captain Vlaar leave.
Right?
