According to L'Equipe, Aston Villa are now in the race to sign Marseille midfielder André Ayew. The 24-year-old came up through Marseille's youth system, breaking into the first team at age 18. The same year he was called up to the Ghana national team, and went with the Black Stars to Brazil this summer.
Fans of the USA are likely to remember Ayew as the man who scored the equalizer in Ghana's group stage match with the USMNT, an eventual win for the latter. He also scored the first goal in Ghana's 2-2 draw with Germany.
Villa fans certainly shouldn't object to the club pursuing Ayew. He's quick and can harass defenses, speeding down the right and scoring the occasional goal. But it seems more a dream than anything. Swansea and QPR are also rumored to be chasing him -- and we certainly know QPR can offer him decent wages -- and there's a vague rumor that Napoli are interested as well. Perhaps they want him after he scored two goals against them in the Champions League last season?
