Despite bringing in Kieran Richardson this summer, and already having Joe Bennett, Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert doesn't seem content with his options on the left side of defence. Aly Cissokho, owned by Valencia but most recently loaned to Liverpool, would be a more solid choice defensively.
Cissokho isn't as good going forward, but he wouldn't necessarily need to be effective. He could also be used as the left centre back in a back three, alongside Ron Vlaar and Jores Okore, and that gives me much more confidence than, say, Philippe Senderos. Undoubtedly we will see some injuries this season, and having more depth is always a good thing as long as players are still getting minutes on the pitch. Maybe Lambert is actually going to care about making a cup run?
Cissokho is still just 26 as well. Something that popped into my head was that Villa still need a defensive midfielder however. A few years ago, we saw Ciaran Clark playing in that area of the pitch. With all these defenders, we could possibly see Clark moved back to that spot as that is one of the thinner areas of the squad.
The fee seems to be around £2.4m for the defender. Do you think Cissokho would be a good buy? Or would you like to see Lambert spending what little money he has elsewhere? Let us know in the comments!
