After Villa suffered their 5th cripplingly embarrassing cup exit (out of 5) under Lambert last night, we have some good news to soften the blow. Fabian Delph has finally received that long awaited England call up. Thoroughly deserved, Delph has been consistently excellent for 18 months. Allegedly Hodgson left him out of his plans for the World Cup due to his disciplinary record. With Gerrard and Lampard out of contention, it would have been harsh not to include him this time around.
The reaction from the general public and social media has been that this is a poor squad. Some journalists are even convinced that Lee Cattermole would have been a stronger choice (that made me laugh). For me, Delph has absolutely no reason to feel he doesn't deserve this. He ran rings around Lampard, Wilshere and pretty much every other England central midfielder last season. He scored some stunning goals and was probably Villa's best player last season, even if Vlaar might have been more crucial to the team for holding together our young defence.
If Delph can reproduce anything like the ability he has shown for Villa on the international stage, the critics will disappear. Rapidly.
Message for Fabian: Congratulations! Now, about that contract...
