Villa keeper set for more international experience

USA keeper Tim Howard is taking a break from the national team for a year, meaning Aston Villa goalie Brad Guzan will get to play more.

Tim Howard of the United States was one of many great goalkeepers at this summer's FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Howard, who has been solid in goal for Everton ever since 2006, has also had a great career for the USA. His national team backup happens to be Aston Villa's keeper, Brad Guzan, another very solid Premier League netminder.

Howard has announced that he is taking a break from the national side until September 2015, citing that he wants to spend more time with his family. In his absence, we should see Brad Guzan playing as the number 1 for the Stars and Stripes.

This is great news for Guzan, who honestly has been logjammed his whole career. After sitting behind fellow American Brad Freidel at Villa for a few years, his contract ran out but fortunately he was re-signed the same summer. Without him, the club would have been in some serious trouble. By the time Howard comes back, it may be clear to everyone that Guzan is the better option in goal as well. They are about even right now, but Howard's status as a cult hero after making seeming infinite saves against Belgium has him firmly planted as the national team goalie.

Are you glad to see Guzan finally get a chance to be the guy for the USA? Or are you possibly worried that more matches may mean another chance for an injury? Let us know in the comments!
