After an inconsistent first season in the Premier League after moving to Aston Villa a year ago, Aleksandar Tonev will be joining Celtic FC on a year long loan. Tonev, a Bulgarian winger who was purchased from Lech Poznan in Poland last summer, struggled to find form for the Claret and Blues. At times he showed the ability to get past players, cut inside, and shoot from his left-sided position, but generally his shots would go wide. Like, Heskey-wide.
Surely Stilyian Petrov provided a good connection for the two sides to broker a deal, and maybe at Parkhead he will perfect the long range shot that we saw Petrov score from midfield with. Wishful thinking probably, but what hurt can come from loaning out one of your younger players to a club you have a good relationship with, and the player should be getting regular playing time. Tonev isn't going to get worse, and if he gets better and the club still want him, he can get a shot in training next summer. Here's to a good season up north, Aleks!
