Left Out! Two Villa first-teamers miss Texas Tour

Antonio Luna and Aleksander Tonev are not travelling to the United States with the rest of the Aston Villa squad

Michael Regan

Aston Villa have arrived in Texas ahead of the preseason tour, however, two players who would have been expected to battle for first-team minutes have been left at home. Antonio Luna and Aleksander Tonev are the two players who have been left out of the 26-player travelling squad which includes injured strikers Christian Benteke and Libor Kozák.

Samir Carruthers is another player who will not be appearing during the US tour, as he was also left out of the squad. With players like Kieran Richardson coming in, it looks as if Joe Bennet and the aforementioned Richardson will be the challengers for the left back spot this season. Even Enda Stevens was included in the squad, which makes you think that Luna may be getting a loan move. A loan spell away could also make sense for both Tonev and Carruthers, as Jack Grealish should be in contention for the left wing/midfield spot ahead of Tonev and Carruthers may be just a year or two away from cracking the Villa first team.

The full touring squad is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan, Jed Steer, Shay Given

Defenders: Matt Lowton, Alan Hutton, Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark, Philippe Senderos, Nathan Baker, Joe Bennett, Chris Herd, Kieran Richardson, Enda Stevens

Midfielders: Fabian Delph, Ashley Westwood, Karim El-Ahmadi, Leandro Bacuna, Gary Gardner, Charles N'Zogbia, Joe Cole, Jack Grealish

Forwards: Andi Weimann, Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke, Darren Bent, Libor Kozák
