Villa linked to Romanian international defender

Doncaster Rovers got relegated to League One, so they may be looking to offload a player or two.

Aston Villa may be on a tight transfer budget over the summer, so they're going to have to look under a lot of rocks for bargains. One potential rock is the lower leagues, and Villa have been connected to Gabriel Tamas of Doncaster Rovers. The Romanian international center back has played in the Premier League as recently as the 2012-13 season, when he finished his third year with West Bromwich Albion. After that he joined Romanian side CFR Cluj, but saw his contract terminated after only a month due to an off-the-pitch incident.

Since January, he has plied his trade with Rovers, who were relegated to League One on the last day of the season, falling to Birmingham City on goal differential. He would likely come at a fairly cheap price, but at 30 years old I'm not sure if he's really the type of player Villa would be looking to swipe from the lower leagues. That said, he's got Premier League experience, so he may be a fit.

Until I hear otherwise, though, I'm going to be fairly dubious of this rumour. We're bringing back our transfer rumour meter for the summer, and I'd say this rates a 2 on a scale of 1-5.

What do you think? Would Tamas be a good fit for Villa?
