Watch the candidates and decide Villa's goal of the season

Sure it was a terrible season, but that doesn't mean there weren't any highlights. Vote on your favorite goal of the year!

Chris Brunskill

Note: This was originally published a few hours before Randy Lerner announced that the club was for sale. Since we all need a chance to remember happy times and also since it got buried, I'm re-publishing it now.

I think it's safe to say that most Aston Villa fans will want to spend as little time as is possible thinking about the season that we just went through. But, despite the misery of the 38-match stretch, there were a few highlights worth remembering.

We've gathered what we think are the eight best goals of the year, presented to you in glorious gif form. Vote in the poll below to determine our winner, and make sure to let me know in the comments if I've forgotten any!

Fabian Delph, August 28, vs. Rotherham United (League Cup 2nd round)

Here may have been our first taste of the new and improved Fabian Delph. Absolutely perfect ball-on-a-string control that let us know the midfielder we'd all been hoping to see for so long was finally here.

Ashley Westwood, November 25, vs. West Bromwich Albion

This was Westwood's first-ever Premier League goal, and it stole a victory away from the Baggies at the Hawthorns. Not a bad combo:

There are a few on this list that need multiple angles to really be appreciated.

Fabian Delph, December 4, vs. Southampton

I may be in the minority on this, but this is one of my top three of the season. Delph had essentially come from the edge of Villa's box and sprinted his way up the entire pitch, only to take the shot without breaking stride and giving Villa the 2-3 win. I adore this goal so much.

Andi Weimann, January 29, vs. West Bromwich Albion

Poor Baggies. They got relentlessly victimized by Villa this season. Here's Andi adding to their misery:

Fabian Delph, January 29, vs. West Bromwich Albion

Remember what I said about victimizing Baggies? Yep.

Delph1b

It's the sudden move to the left, with perfect precision, that really makes this goal neat. Oh, and the fact that it embarrasses West Brom. That always helps.

Christian Benteke, March 2, vs. Norwich City

The only Benteke appearance on the list. Sure wish we'd had more of him this year. Ron Vlaar should get a lot of credit on this one, too, as it was his pin-point pass that made the finish possible.

Fabian Delph, March 15, vs. Chelsea

If I were a gambling man, I'd place my bet on this one winning. The goal that every Chelsea fan will tell you Delph never meant to score was one of the most incredible goals in the league this season. Here's the view normally:

Delph2bDid you see that? No? Well let me slow it down for you:

Yep. Totally didn't mean to do that.

Andi Weimann against Hull City on May 3

Not really the most spectacular of goals, but it basically assured Villa of safety, so I feel as if it should be on here.
