Transfer Deadline Day: Juventus striker to Villa? Now that's a funny one

New, comments

Rumors suggest that Fabio Quagliarella could join Aston Vila on loan for the rest of the season.

Well, we asked for something different this transfer window. This rumor sure fits the bill: According to Metro, Aston Villa are set to bid for Juventus striker Fabio Quagliarella.

What's going on with this one? Does the newspaper simply have one hat filled with slips marked "players to leave their clubs" and one marked "clubs in need of a player," and someone just sticks their hand into each, matching the slips of together? Because otherwise, this juicy bit of gossip makes no sense.

Technically, it's possible: Villa already have two players in on loan, but Premier League rules won't prevent another loanee coming in from abroad. And it will likely be for just a small fee paid to Juve. But it still doesn't make a lot of sense.

Yes, ahead of the World Cup, Quagliarella likely wants a move away from Juventus, in hopes of finding more regular playing time. A loan makes sense for the 31 year old. But again, he's not filling a need for the Villa - unless that injury to Gabby Agbonlahor is more serious than we know. Quagliarella is able to play as a center forward or on the wing, but he's certainly not a creative midfielder, and it's not really the attack that's hurting.

Unless Christian Benteke is on his way out and we just haven't heard anything about it...

PS: Paul, if you're really that interested in a want-away Juventus striker, grab Mirko Vucinic instead. Please.
