Brad Guzan named to USMNT World Cup qualifying roster for Mexico and Costa Rica matches

Aston Villa's keeper has been chosen to help the US against Mexico and Costa Rica

USA TODAY Sports

Aston Villa don't play again until September 14, but that doesn't mean that the club's players won't be on a pitch anywhere. Brad Guzan was named as one of the keepers for the United States squad by manager Jurgen Klinsmann today for the national team's World Cup qualifying matches against Costa Rica and Mexico. The United States used an absolutely stunning run of form this summer to vault themselves to the top of the CONCACAF qualifying group and sit two points ahead of Costa Rica in first place.

The traditionally strong Mexican side has struggled this year, and the group is the United States' for the taking. Should the team manage to win both matches, they will clinch their trip to Brazil. The Costa Rica match takes place at Estadio Nacional in San Jose Costa Rica on September 6, and the Mexico match will occur in Columbus, OH four days later.

Guzan hasn't played too much of a role in the national team, but there have been calls lately for the Villan to begin getting starts ahead of Tim Howard. Given the success the US had with Howard this summer, I imagine Guzan will still stay on the bench, but one never knows. We'll certainly let you know if Guzan sees the pitch for the United States.
