Central defender Nathan Baker has renewed his contract with Aston Villa and will now be with the club through the 2015-16 season. The 22-year-old had a breakout season under Paul Lambert, and while his play could stand to be improved at times, he's plenty young with loads of raw talent. Baker has come up through the Aston Villa academy system, and is yet another sign that whatever troubles are present at the top-flight club, there is always talent waiting.
After signing, Baker talked about the potential that this club has going forward:
As a team, we really grew over the course of the season. We're going to keep growing and the competition for places will ensure that. There's still ways we can improve as players and as a team and there's a lot of potential here. If we play next season the way we ended the one just gone, we believe we can push up the table and surprise some people.
Hopefully the re-upping of Baker's contract is a sign that some others will shortly follow (Andreas Weimann and Christian Benteke, in particular, would be nice).
