Aston Villa Looking To League Two for Chesterfield Striker?

Our friends at the Mirror are at it again. Sounds like someone's either gotten into Stephen Ireland's box of goods or Paul Lambert is really going after some curious targets. Jordan Bowery, a twenty-one year old striker who plays for Chesterfield in League Two is rumored to have caught the eye of Aston Villa who have tabled a 600k pound bid for him plus incentives.

This is actually not entirely surprising given Lambert's managerial roots in the lower leagues of England. He's had a penchant for scouting the lower leagues and looking to bring in young, inexpensive talent that he can work into his plans. From what I can discern, Bowery is a big target man - the kind of forward that Lambert has been going after since he was announced as manager.

It's clear that while Villa desperately need help at left back that they're going to end up signing a forward whether it's the potential-filled Belgian Christian Benteke or the unknown Bowery. It's important to remember that Aston Villa isn't the destination place it once was and without the offer of European competition and what we can assume is a delicate situation with regards to money, Lambert is going to try and find these types of players to build depth.

In a completely contradictory manner the end of the Mirror piece mentions that Southampton's Rickie Lambert is on the radar as well. He's a very good player who can put the ball in the net but he's also 30 years old and would not be cheap. Now that would be shocking.
