The week in football, October 22-28

There have been a few changes this week in football. Most notably, only two leagues in our top seven now boast undefeated sides -- and no one remains perfect. Keep reading to find out who fell.

Premier League

The biggest news of the week is, of course, Chelsea's loss to Manchester United. I can't claim total neutrality for this match, living as I do with a Chelsea supporter, but I think it's still fair to say that Mark Clattenburg really wrecked this tie. Ashley Young may have dived, there was some contact on Fernando Torres, and that goal by Javier Hernandez was offside. Matches between two top teams should always result in a little debate, but any fun to be had in this one is now soured.

And to think we thought the officiating in the Merseyside Derby (2-2 by the way) was poor. Ah, the glory of hindsight.

In happier news, Aston Villa are two points into safety! Whoo-hoo!

La Liga

The only league in our top seven that still has two unbeaten teams: Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Barcelona thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0, Lionel Messi bagging a brace. Atlético kept up with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Osasuna, and yes, Radamel Falcao scored. He and Cristiano Ronaldo have each scored 9 thus far, to Messi's 13.

Speaking of Ronaldo, Real Madrid took out their anger at having lost to Borussia Dortmund in Champions League play by dominating Mallorca 5-0. Ronaldo, too, got a brace.

Bundesliga

Bayern Munich finally toppled this week, losing 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in a hilarious manner: In the 87th minute, Sidney Sam's header bounced off Jerome Boateng, past Manuel Neuer and into the back of the net.

Bayern still hold a four point lead over Schalke, who, bolstered by their victory over Arsenal midweek, beat Nurnberg 1-0. Nurnberg remain in the relegation zone, but really no one in the bottom half of the German table looks safe or comfortable.

Serie A

The referees in Serie A had a bit of a nightmare week as well. The biggest blunders came in Catania - Juventus, where cries of conspiracy could be heard on the mainland, wafting across the waters from Sicily. The home side had a goal incorrectly disallowed for being offside, while Juve's only goal should have been ruled out.

Elsewhere, Lazio fell out of the top three, possibly another victim of poor officiating in their 2-0 loss to Fiorentina. Two players were sent off and a goal was disallowed. Napoli's match was surprisingly free of contention as they beat Chievo Verona 1-0, maintaining their lead over Inter Milan, who beat Bologna 3-1.

Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain have finally gotten into the swing of things, beating last-placed Nancy 1-0 and remaining unbeaten in France. Zlatan Ibrahimovic already has 10 goals as he campaigns for the Golden Boot. But PSG face Marseille in the Coupe de la Ligue on Wednesday, which could be quite tasty, considering the rivalry between the two clubs, and the fact that Marseille are tied for second in the league with Toulouse.

Meanwhile, Lorient and Ajaccio played out an eight-goal thriller. Ajaccio had a 4-1 lead going into the second half, but the home side came back thanks to a brace by Jeremie Aliadiere and a last minute equalizer from Gilles Sunu.

Eredivisie

Twente secured a necessary victory over Waalwijk, thanks to Dusan Tadic, who has 4 goals from 6 matches. The win allowed them to maintain their one-point lead over PSV, who beat Zwolle 2-1. Sometimes I think I just include the Dutch league for the fun of writing out the names. PSV needed the help of Joey Van der Berg, however, a Zwolle player who scored at both ends.

Elsewhere

The SuperClasico returned after a 14-month absence, bringing raucous supporters and inflatable pigs to El Monumental. River Plate took a 2-0 lead, but Boca Juniors converted a (what else) controversial penalty before Walter Erviti snuck in the equalizer during stoppage time.

Guess who's the top scorer in the A-League? That's right, it's none other than Emile Heskey. He's got four goals in four matches and scored a brace inside three minutes as Newcastle Jets beat Melbourne 2-1.
