Aston Villa Defender Carlos Cuellar Puts Rumors Of Rangers Medical To Rest

Rumors that Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar was in Glasgow to take a medical ahead of a move to Rangers were making the rounds for much of today, but the Holte End cult hero put them to rest himself with an update to his Facebook page:

Cuellar has been linked with a move back to Ibrox for much of the summer, but the talk quieted down after Rangers early exit from the Champions League. There are still three weeks left before the close of the transfer window and it's possible Cuellar may still end up back in Glasgow, but at this point it would appear as though nothing is imminent.

With Villa's lack of depth at the back, that's quite clearly good news. Cuellar's ability to competently play as both a center and full back is just far too valuable for Villa to give up. It's likely that any transfer fee the club would receive in return for Cuellar would be reinvested in the defense, but it's unlikely that a player with the same level of both flexibility and quality could be brought in. Unless King Carlos has expressed a desire to leave the club, selling him makes absolutely no sense and there's no indication that he's done anything of the sort. It's all well and good to trim the fat from the wage bill, but Cuellar is an asset and his value to Villa is likely far higher than his value to other clubs.  And for now, he's still a Villan.
