Welcome to the January transfer window, Aston Villa fans. While other supporters dream of Carlos Tevez, Olivier Giroud, Dimitar Berbatov or even Chris Samba, we get to make our peace with the fact that the biggest mid-year signing for our club will likely be defender Jean-Alain Boumsong. Is 7am too early to start drinking?
Boumsong, for those of you who have blocked out his name, came to Newcastle from (where else) Rangers, for a ridiculous fee. Despite having signed a 5 1/2 year contract, he left after his second season with the Magpies, possibly because those mean Geordies were busy blaming him for all the goals that he let slip into the back of the net.
After Newcastle, Boumsong went on to Juventus, which sounds impressive until you realize that he went in August 2006, after calciopoli broke and Juve were sent down to Serie B. The Old Lady needed someone to replace Fabio Cannavaro, who left after the club were relegated, but Boumsong certainly wasn't that person. They sent him on to Lyon in January 2008.Boumsong wanted a French club in order to increase his chances of getting into the Euro 2008 squad, which he managed, although he only took the pitch once, as a substitute in France's match against Italy. Having achieved such an illustrious dream, the defender moved on to Panathinaikos, where he's exchanging sweaters with Jean Makoun while "appearing regularly" for the Greek side.
So what we've got here is a 32 year old defender who played under Alex McLeish seven seasons ago and is currently plying his trade in Greece. Yep, it's nearly inevitable that Boumsong will be donning claret and blue come January.
