I am hoping that Lambert is kept on for the next season, whoever the owner is. He has been dealt a bad hand and feel that he has probably done as well as anyone could do. Don’t forget that Roberto Martinez actually turned us down because of the restrictions placed on the job. We should owe Lambert a debt of gratitude for working with these restrictions and keeping us up. Maybe the tactics and quality of football left a bit to be desired but I would like Lambert to now have the chance to start building something special.
There are many things that need changing within the club, but there are a few that the manager has control of.
It is now time for Villa to go for the best coaches available. We had the situation where the players hated training and the coaching,. There was no respect and when that is lost then everything is lost. Players want coaches to improve them. There were stories at Man Utd, where the players didn’t enjoy training and didn’t feel it was improving them. Now is the time to overhaul the entire coaching set up. Aim for the best. We may not get them but we should be looking for the best.
In relation to the Delfouneso article, I suggest an overhaul of the youth coaching set up. We have a fantastic academy but why don’t these top kids progress to be top players? The Southampton academy has produced many more top talents, but 2 of their coaches have left, so why not try and get them in??? No-brainer for me.
Villa’s scouting has never been anywhere near good enough. I remember the days when even Coventry had more scouts than we did. It was a shame that the Houllier era was so short as he had identified the scouting as a big area to improve. With his contacts, then we’d have had a scouting network up there with the best of them.
This is where money comes into it. If we spend a million on a player then you are taking a punt that he can develop into a Premier League player. Spend 100 million on Gareth Bale and injuries aside then there is no risk. I am saying that with his hands tied, Lambert has done an excellent job in finding some decent players for the money he has had to spend. I just hope that he has money to buy 5-6 quality players and at the end of next season he can be judged on how well he has done spending that money.
