Talk this past week of a sale of Aston Villa have been all over the headlines. In the not-so-distant past fans had been grumbling for a new owner who will invest in the club. More recently, fans have been calling for the head of the manager. Owner Randy Lerner issued this statement today on the official site.
"Following the point yesterday at Villa Park, there have been stories about my selling the Club. On a personal level, I had hoped the emphasis would have been on the amazing effort on the part of our manager and our players to regroup throughout a very difficult week. Injuries to Libor and Christian, compounded with the early loss of Jores and the difficult rehab of Charles have no doubt left Paul with far less to work with than is fair. Still, Paul Lambert has done nothing but work within the parameters I've set, put the Club first and continue to trust his players. As regards my personal role at the Club and the steady rumours of a sale, I will address these after the season. Paul Lambert, Paul Faulkner and I speak daily and remain committed to the immediate job of limiting distraction and confusion in order that Villa have the best chance possible of finishing on a strong note."
- Randy Lerner, Aston Villa Chairman
Saying that he will address the issue after the season leads me to believe that he is willing to sell up in the summer. The prices that have been thrown around make sense, as do the people who are rumoured to be interested in buying the club. Cutting the wage bill the past couple seasons in order to get rid of some of the debt the club has made sense if the club were to be sold. Lambert has had a specific job to do and again I don't think he is a long term manager, just someone to keep the club in the Premier League while bringing in youth and getting rid of players brought in by past managers.
Will Lerner sell in the summer? Let us know in the comments!
