The Birmingham Mail is reporting that Aston Villa have been connected to Chelsea winger Gael Kakuta. The 22-year-old winger has made only 6 appearances with Chelsea despite joining the club's academy in 2007. In the meantime, he's had loan spells at Fulham, Bolton, Dijon, and most recently Vitesse. In his senior career he's got 58 appearances and 6 goals.
Kakuta has been more prolific, however, at the national level, where he has appeared for all of the French youth teams from U16-21. He's had trouble adjusting to senior-level play, but was once considered a promising prospect for Chelsea. He is perhaps most famous for joining Chelsea from RC Lens in a controversial move that led to FIFA imposing a 2-year ban on Chelsea transfer activity. The ban was later overturned as being patently absurd, of course.
The Mail hint that Kakuta would join Aston Villa on a loan, which would only be possible if there was an option for Aston Villa to purchase him at the end of the loan, since Chelsea have already loaned one player to Villa. Kakuta was recalled on January 2 from his Vitesse loan, and would be free to move at any point.
The addition of a winger would be an interesting one for Villa. Kakuta is primarily an attacking player, and would join Paul Lambert's burgeoning strike-force. But as a winger he would add an element of width to the team that could be awfully helpful. What do you think about the move? Should Villa pursue it? Let us know in the comments!
