Let’s all stop worrying about Christian Benteke leaving

Ross Kinnaird

Aston Villa have enough to worry about without constant fretting over Belgian forward Christian Benteke leaving the club. Let's just concentrate on the good, shall we?

Not because it won't happen, but because worrying about it does no one any good.

As you've no doubt heard by now, Christian Benteke's agent opened his mouth over the weekend. As is typically the case when an agent's mouth opens, nothing good came out of it. Though a literal reading of Kismet* Eris' statement could give one hope that Benteke isn't necessarily looking to move, no agent has ever said anything that ought to be taken literally. Clearly, Benteke (or at the very least his agent) is beginning to prepare for a move away from Villa and sooner rather than later.

That's unfortunate, to say the least. Benteke has been one of the few bright spots of this miserable season, and most Villa supporters would be quite pleased to see him continue to develop in a claret and blue shirt. And these things are never very pleasant; players that were once universally loved by the fans become hated nearly overnight due to the often dirty business of forcing a move, the relationship between manager and board can become strained, and the funds generated from the sale of players of Benteke's caliber are seldom sufficient to please the supporters. It's an ugly situation, and even uglier for a club such as Villa who have so few valuable assets.

In short, this summer could turn out to be very unpleasant. And for precisely that reason, we should all do everything in our power to ignore this whole business until such a thing is no longer an option. There are those that will turn against Benteke, branding him a money-grubbing backstabber and spending the remainder of the season depriving themselves of one of the few pleasures of being a Villa fan in the present day. But there's another path, and it's one that I'd recommend. Don't worry about it. Don't even think about it. Just enjoy Benteke while he's here, hope that he continues to perform well and helps Villa avoid the drop. It really is that simple.

Sports fans are widely renowned for their tendencies to panic and assume the worst, and Villa fans are certainly no exception. But in this case (in most cases, really) there's not a single positive thing that can come of it. Christian Benteke might leave in the summer, and there's nothing you or I can do about it. And when it happens, people may very well be justified in being angry or upset. But for now, he's a Villa player, and a very important one at that. That's about all that matters.

*Kismet is a Turkish word meaning fate or pre-determined destiny. With that in mind, hiring an agent named Kismet seems like a really poor investment.
