Aston Villa Transfer Rumors: Given WAS in for a Physical, N'Zogbia Deal Slogs On

I mentioned yesterday that there were rumors of Shay Given being at Bodymoor Heath for a physical with Aston Villa yesterday. But I didn't want to run anything without an actual solid source. Well, a source has appeared! Mat Kendrick, one of the most reliable reporters out there, writes in the Birmingham Mail today that Given was taking a tour of the training facility and there for a medical check-up yesterday. Assuming Aston Villa and and Given can come to terms on a contract, the signing will be announced early next week.

It's about time that Aston Villa actually signed someone, and to fill perhaps the biggest hole in the team (quite literally) is a strong opening move. Now, should this have come past the Ides of July? Probably not, but fans can't be choosers. Given may not be quite as good as Brad Friedel was, but he is an excellent keeper and will be an asset for the team.

Also in that story is a note that Aston Villa appear to be the only team left in the running for Wigan winger Charles N'Zogbia. I hope Mat is right, because that would force Dave Whelan to back down on his ridiculous valuation of the Frenchman. If anything substantial happens, we'll be sure to have it for you.
